Retailers will be able to offer Sunday deliveries for the first time from July with the launch of the UK’s first comprehensive seven-day parcel service.
Parcel delivery company DPD is preparing to roll out the service, which it says will cover 98% of the UK population, enabling retailers to match the high demand from online shoppers for next-day Sunday delivery.
Currently shoppers can not receive items on a Sunday despite Saturday often being the busiest day of the week for online shopping as well as on the high street.
In February Hermes announced plans for a seven day service, but has not specified when it plans to begin deliveries. Amazon has also offered selected Sunday deliveries, launching a series of pilot schemes earlier in the year.
DPD chief executive Dwain McDonald said that the service would be “very appealing” to etailers looking for ways to get products to customers throughout the week.
He said: “We know from talking to retailers and recipients that there is a real demand for Sunday deliveries. The majority of our larger customers in the retail sector are moving to a 24/7 operation, so we wanted to make sure that they have a trusted delivery partner that can provide a full collection and delivery service every day of the week too.”
DPD has invested heavily in its UK logistics infrastructure, with 15 new depots being rolled out nationwide including a £100m parcel hub at Hinckley Commercial Park in Leicestershire.
