Apple has parted ways with retail boss John Browett just six months after he joined with a £36m “golden hello”.
The technology giant did not explain the reasons why Browett is leaving, but his exit comes after controversy about staff levels in Apple stores, which led to questions about his commitment to the famous standards of customer service.
Browett, who was formerly chief executive of Currys and PC World owner Dixons, moved to California to take up the role of senior vice-president of retail at Apple in April and was responsible for 361 stores.
Browett had won acclaim for his renewal and transformation plan at Dixons, which was credited by many for ensuring the survival and revival of the retailer.
His hiring was Apple chief executive Tim Cook’s first big appointment, and when it was announced he said Browett had a commitment to customer service “like no one else we’ve met”.
However, the changes he initiated alienated some Apple Store staff and led his office to issue an internal statement admitting “we messed up”.
