All Marks & Spencer store staff will earn at least £10 per hour from the beginning of April under the retailer’s latest reward scheme.
Marks & Spencer has increased its base rate of pay by 50p to £10 for staff outside London and to £11.25 in the capital.
M&S said the new base rate of pay is ahead of both the national living wage and real living wage in the UK and London.
M&S has also added to its wider rewards package, including access to a virtual GP service and financial advice.
The increase came as retailers and many other businesses seek to recruit and retain staff, as post-pandemic labour shortages affect some areas and amid fierce competition to attract the best employees.
“We’re making sure that every colleague, whatever they do and wherever they work, is properly rewarded”
M&S chief executive Steve Rowe
M&S chief executive Steve Rowe said: “M&S is always at its best when we’ve put our people at the heart of it. The contribution our teams have made to support our customers and each other every day through some really challenging times has been remarkable.
“By once again increasing our investment into one of the best all-round reward offers for store colleagues across retail, we’re making sure that every colleague, whatever they do and wherever they work, is properly rewarded and supported.”
