Etail giant Amazon has unveiled ambitions to increase its bricks and mortar footprint by opening a further three physical bookstores in the US.
Amazon opened its first physical bookstore, Amazon Books, in Seattle last year and is now set to open at least three more shops.
Amazon spokeswoman Deborah Bass said the etailer planned to open bookstores in Chicago, San Diego and Portland, with the Chicago location set to open next year.
Investing in physical stores marks an about-turn from Amazon’s relentless focus on online retail, and could pave the way for other types of physical stores, according to the Financial Times.
Earlier this year, the etail giant reportedly said it was eyeing up to 400 bookshops following the success of its first in Seattle.
As well as selling books, the store showcases Amazon gadgets, such as Kindle ereaders and the Fire TV. The prices in-store match those available online, so customers check the cost of each book, which do not carry price tags, at price stands.
