Figures from researchers at FootFall show there has been a slowdown since the hectic Sales period, with a fall of 0.9 per cent for the week to January 23 compared with the week before. However, compared with the same week last year there are 2.3 per cent more shoppers in department stores and town centres.
FootFall market information analyst Sheelah Turner said: 'There is still a positive feeling that bargains can still be had, with the number of shoppers up on the same week last year. This is a more positive start to the year than in 2003 or last year, and shows that consumer confidence has not been dented by the recent doom and gloom comments about retail in the press.'
FootFall figures for the week show there were 4.4 per cent more shoppers in UK town centres than in the same period a year ago.
