Shopper traffic fell back on December 27 as shoppers pulled their sales spending forward to Boxing Day.

Figures from Footfall show a 2.9 per cent fall in shopper numbers yesterday, following a 25.1 per cent increase on Boxing Day.

Many more retailers started their Sales on Boxing Day this year rather than December 27, which is traditionally the first day of the Sales and the busiest day of the year for shopper traffic.

Martin Davies of Footfall-owner Experian said it was inevitable shopper numbers on the December 27 would be hit, but he added the drop was "surprisingly small".
