Halfords’ store staff are trialling using smartwatches to help them pick items for customer’s click-and-collect orders.
The service is being trialled in Leamington Spa and involves staff being automatically notified on their watches of incoming customers and their orders.
Staff are also using the smartwatches to generate a pick list, which allows them to put new orders together as they walk around the store.
The functionality is also available on smartphones and has been launched by technology specialist Red Ant.
Halfords digital director Katrina Jamieson said: “Our store innovation programme has been set up to allow us to trial innovative ideas and test them in a real-world environment, so that we can see in a very practical way how they could benefit both customers and colleagues.
“The click-and-collect pilot in our Leamington Spa store is a world first, and an innovative step towards providing a fully-connected retail experience for our customers.”
The pilot in Leamington Spa also includes touchscreen kiosks at the front of the store where customers can confirm their order and are told where to collect their order.
The kiosks will also attempt to upsell other products to customers. Customers can also request help from the kiosk, which will alert staff members via their smartwatch or phone.
