Sir Terry Leahy, Tesco chief executive, will head to India in coming weeks as the UK's largest retailer plots an entry into one of the world's biggest consumer markets.
Tesco's attempt to enter the market is being backed by representatives of the UK Government. Sir Michael Arthur, high commissioner at the British High Commission in New Delhi told reporters: 'We are lobbying like mad. They don't have mass retail here, they have mom and pop stores.'
Leahy's visit comes as New Delhi considers opening India's supermarket sector to foreigners.
