Bookseller and stationer WHSmith disclosed that total sales fell 1% in the first 10 weeks of the financial year and it is planning for competitive trading conditions at Christmas.

Like-for-likes at WHSmith’s travel division declined 2%, which was in line with management expectations. “Although passenger numbers in Air remain soft, we are well placed to benefit when passenger numbers recover,” the retailer reported.

High street stores suffered a four per cent comparable-store sales fall, also as anticipated, and changes to the business mix are ongoing.

The retailer said: “Whilst we remain cautious about the consumer environment and anticipate competitive trading in our markets over the key Christmas period, we have planned accordingly.”
