A reported 1,700 jobs are at risk because the company failed to find a buyer for the chain, which was on the market for£30 million.
Majority shareholder and All:sports founder David Hughes has called in administrators BDO Stoy Hayward to deal with the company's customers and suppliers.
BDO joint administrator Dermot Power told The Times: 'The way this has happened is a function of the rapidly changing pattern of the high street. This company was caught in the middle - it's not the biggest and not a niche player.'
The company was founded by Hughes in 1977, but has recently suffered under competitive pressure from rivals JJB Sports - the country's largest sports retail chain - and Sports World.
