Asda has warned shoppers not to fall for fake emails that claim to be from the grocer attempting to collect personal information.
The phishing emails, the latest in a series of scams to hit the big four grocers, tells shoppers they have won a free Asda gift card worth £50 to £1,000.
Those who clicked on the email were asked to enter their name, date of birth, email address and mobile phone number into a website. Customers were then told they would be entered into a prize draw, the Daily Mail reported.
Asda posted on its Facebook page: “Do not respond to emails claiming to be from Asda with the subject: ‘You have just received a gift card from us’. These emails are nothing to do with us and may be an attempt to capture your personal information. Please warn your friends.”
Asda is the latest victim in a series of scams. In August, Morrisons was hit by a scam whereby Facebook users were offered gift vouchers in the grocers’ name.
Morrisons warned shoppers not to follow instructions to receive a ‘free £250 Gift Voucher from Morrisons’ at the time.
Tesco was also hit by a similar non-existent voucher scam last December.
