The retailer hopes to attract customers who are put off taking out insurance because of the cost. A recent survey by the pharmacy group revealed that about 80 per cent of people did not take out medical insurance because of cost-related factors. In addition, 36 per cent would consider taking out insurance if they were offered a competitive rate.
Customers will be able to reduce their monthly premiums by collecting what Boots has called vitality points through, for example, completing an online health review, having a stress or eye test, or downloading online meal plans.
The UK private medical insurance market is estimated to be worth about£3 billion a year.
A spokesman for PruHealth said the partnership would make private medical cover 'more accessible and affordable via the high street and really begin to change people's attitude to health and well-being.'
