About 1.4 million customers are set to receive a share of profits from trading across all the group's divisions. Customers sign up to the membership scheme by paying£1. They then collect loyalty points and are awarded a dividend payment in relation to the number of points they hold.
The Co-operative membership scheme allows members to give all or part of their share of the profits to community projects. Of the total sum,£450,000 will be given directly to community projects and just under half of members have elected to give away some of their personal share.
The group reported first-half profits up 32 per cent to£157.4 million for the 28 weeks to July 29.
The group is also beginning a roll-out of its fresh brand identity - The Co-operative - across its 3,000 stores, which includes travel, grocery, banking, insurance, funerals and pharmacy services.
