Department store Peter Jones started its Sale on selected lines yesterday, offering up to 50 per cent off. At 4.30 pm it had a steady flow of customers. However, Marks & Spencer, at the other end of the street, was not on Sale and the store was packed with Christmas shoppers.
Several shoe retailers had decided to kick off their Sales. Shellys was offering 20 per cent off, Jones was on Sale and Nine West and Office were both tempting shoppers with 50 per cent discounts. Russell & Bromley launched its first day of Sale and was full of shoppers. LK Bennett was fairly empty despite being on Sale.
Clothing retailers were more mixed, with some still holding off early discounting. Jane Shilton and French Connection were both offering up to 50 per cent off, while Gap and Levi's were advertising 40 per cent off. Karen Millen was promising 20 per cent off footwear and accessories and Hobbs was also on Sale. Oasis was one of the only mid-market retailers not on Sale but was still heaving with customers.
Of the more upmarket clothing retailers, Joseph was on Sale, offering between 80 per cent and 90 per cent off. Designer underwear retailer Calvin Klein was on Sale. Jaeger was not on Sale but still had a similar amount of shoppers to its competitors.
Overall, King's Road itself was fairly busy late on Tuesday afternoon but many of the stores weren't that busy.
