The retailer has invested£30 million over three years in the distribution centre to provide a world-class delivery service for both customers and stores. The retailer expects annual savings to be in the region of£20 million.
The centre, based in Newark, will also employ more than 1,000 staff at peak times. The group said that all goods sold for home delivery and 80 per cent of all branch goods sold in its Currys, Currys.digital and online stores - including dixons.co.uk - will be handled by Newark.
DSGi supply chain director for UK and Ireland Jeremy Ross said: 'Being a leader in retail requires leadership in the supply chain. Currys sells an MP3 player every five seconds and a flatscreen TV every 15 seconds. The Newark distribution centre now has the capacity to deal with in excess of 500 vehicle deliveries per day. Its typical stock-holding is 3 million units and it has nearly 5km of conveyer belts.'
Earlier this month, the electricals giant revealed group sales were up 14 per cent in the 52 weeks to April 28, with like-for-likes up 4 per cent. Internet like-for-like sales also soared 182 per cent and now represent 10 per cent of sales, up from 3 per cent the previous year.
