Ocado boss Tim Steiner explains to Retail Week why Morrisons’ decision to use its intellectual property was the right decision for the Bradford based grocer.
He said that adopting Ocado’s technology enabled it to ramp up its online business quickly.
“When they took the decision to go online, they chose not to build it themselves at huge costs and huge risk and huge delay. They chose to come to us and use our platform and get out in front of customers quickly and with a phenomenal service and we can ramp it very fast. They are ramping it at multiples of speed we were ever able to grow our business at that stage of development.”
Steiner said Morrisons.com, which currently serves Warwickshire and Yorkshire, will launch in London “soon”.
Steiner envisages the future of Ocado to involve multiple revenue streams from a global operation.
He said: “We’ll see the platform being used across the world, shipping billions of pounds of groceries. Some of that will be as Ocado being a sole retailer, some will be joint ventures with other retailers and some of it will be more licensed deals like we’ve done with Morrisons.”
