Boohoo has started production at its new 23,000 sq ft factory on Thurmaston Lane in Leicester, which boss John Lyttle says “reinforces” the fast fashion etailer’s commitment to the city, and UK manufacturing.

The start of production at Boohoo’s first own factory in Leicester, which has the capacity to make up to 25,000 garments per week,  will create 180 new jobs for the retailer.

Boohoo’s self-owned factory is the latest step by the fast fashion etailer to improve its reputation after it was found to be using Leicester-based suppliers which paid staff below minimum wage in 2020.

The new factory, which Boohoo has invested “millions of pounds” in, will also serve as a training facility for product teams across the 13 brands operated by the etail group.

New recruits working at the factory will be employed on the standard employee package offered to all Boohoo staff, which includes paying the National Living Wage and other benefits such as a 40% discount and 33 days of paid holiday.

Boohoo chief executive John Lyttle said the new factory marked “an exciting new chapter” for Boohoo.

“The Thurmaston Lane site reinforces our commitment to UK manufacturing and our long-standing partnership with Leicester.  It is more than just a factory, it’s a hub of learning and collaboration, as it gives our own teams the chance to work onsite and an opportunity to see a working factory first-hand,” he added.
