During her four years at Selfridges, Gunning oversaw the creation of two book departments in Manchester and Birmingham. Before joining the department store chain she worked at Waterstone's, where her roles included managing the Covent Garden and High Street Kensington stores in London.
Gunning said: 'It will be a great wrench to leave Selfridges after almost four years, but I just couldn't resist such an opportunity. I am extremely pleased and proud to be joining Foyles - and at such an exciting time, too.'
Foyles has recently completed the four-year refurbishment of its Charing Cross branch in London and opened a second store at the Royal Festival Hall.
Gunning will join Foyles on April 25. She replaces David Hayden, who left in early March to work in publishing.
