Amazon has revealed its plans to open a new grocery store format – separate from Amazon Go and Whole Foods Market – as part of its long term plans to ramp up its food offering.
Following a post advertising jobs at the store, the online giant confirmed its plans on Monday to CNET following speculation in The Wall Street Journal in March.
An Amazon spokesperson said: “Amazon is opening a grocery store in Woodland Hills [a neighbourhood in Los Angeles] in 2020.”
The retail giant said the store will not feature its Amazon Go technology, which allows customers to pay for goods without waiting at a till point, and will focus on a more conventional set-up found in typical supermarkets.
The new format will be a standalone store with its own branding separate from the 500 Whole Foods stores that Amazon bought in 2017 for $13.2bn (£10.2bn)
“When it comes to grocery shopping, we know customers love choice, and this new store offers another grocery option that’s distinct from Whole Foods Market, which continues to grow and remain the leader in quality natural and organic food,” the spokesperson said.
Additionally, Amazon offers customers grocery delivery through its primary website, Amazon Fresh and Prime Now.
The new US store is reported to be moving into a 35,000 sq ft, former Toys R Us unit. The roles of store lead, food associates and grocery associates have all been advertised.
No other locations for the new format have been confirmed.
