Asda has appointed two new senior members of its technology team to help boost the development of a new strategy and lead on its separation from Walmart.

The grocery giant has appointed former Marks & Spencer chief technology officer Rob Barnes as its new delivery director. He will start his new role early next year and will be responsible for the design, building and delivery of all colleague and customer-facing technologies.

Before working at M&S, Barnes was managing director of Accenture’s Retail Tech Advisory business where he managed tech delivery for clients such as Dyson, Clarks, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Best.

The grocer also announced Adrian Berry will be joining as chief technology officer in the new year.

Berry will be responsible for all core technology teams including service delivery, infrastructure and enterprise services. He was most recently chief information officer at Aston Barclay Vehicle Remarketing and previously UK CIO of Lowell Credit Management.

Asda chief information officer Carl Dawson said: “We are delighted to welcome Rob and Adrian to the Asda Technology team. With their combined experience, I am confident that we will now have the necessary expertise and experience to build best-in-class retail technology systems as we continue our separation journey from Walmart.”
