Tesco has revealed its domestic human resources director Judith Nelson has quit after 22 years with the grocer.

Nelson, who began her career with the retailer as a graduate trainee, will step down as UK and Ireland people director at the end of February. A spokeswoman said Nelson had “decided to develop her career outside of Tesco”, but declined to say where she was going. 

Nelson was once tipped as a possible candidate to lead the grocer’s UK and Ireland business.

The news comes just days after it emerged that another long-serving senior employee, business transformation director Jill Easterbrook, was leaving the grocer.

Tesco boss Dave Lewis is attempting to re-stabilise the retailer after last year’s accounting scandal led to the exit of several executives, while trying to fend off the threat from discounters such as Aldi and Lidl.

Nelson will be replaced by Tesco business support director Natasha Adams early next year. Adams has been with Tesco for 17 years and has also served as operations people director and customer service director.
