Grocer Asda has unveiled a new trial home delivery partnership with Uber Eats to offer customers “greater flexibility and access” to its products.
The trial, which rolls out this week from two Asda stores in Leeds and Birmingham, offers delivery in as little as 30 mins and is Uber Eats’ first major grocery partnership in the UK.
Asda said there would be no minimum basket size needed for customers to qualify for delivery and it would offer over 300 of its own-brand and branded everyday products including ready meals, fresh fruit, vegetables and a selection of beers, wine and spirits.
The grocer said if the trial is successful, the partnership “may be extended to more Asda stores later this year”.
Asda vice president of online grocery Simon Gregg said: “We’re pleased to be partnering with Uber Eats to trial a rapid grocery delivery service for customers in Leeds and Birmingham
“This will give Asda customers more choice in how they shop with us and offer yet another way to quickly and conveniently get their favourite branded and own-brand products delivered to the doorstep.
“Customers can use the Uber Eats app to select from hundreds of items for delivery in the same way they would shop for a takeaway.”
Uber Eats UK general manager Toussaint Wattinne said: “I am delighted to be partnering with Asda for our first major grocery partnership in the UK.
“Uber Eats is looking forward to making sure customers can quickly and conveniently order groceries and treats, and I know this partnership will offer even more choices for customers using the Uber Eats app.”
Uber Eats had previously struck a similar delivery deal with convenience store group Costcutter and had been in discussions with Sainsbury’s about a partnership in 2019.
The tie-up is the latest in a string of deals between UK grocers and delivery apps during the coronavirus pandemic.
Discounter Aldi launched its first grocery home delivery service with Deliveroo in May, while Morrisons unveiled a tie-up with the same company in April. Marks & Spencer and the Co-op have also launched partnerships since the lockdown began in March.
