Waitrose is changing its free tea and coffee offer for loyalty card holders, who will only receive a complimentary drink after paying for their shopping.
Currently, myWaitrose members are able to pick up a cup and help themselves to tea or coffee as they browse the upmarket grocer’s shops.
But Waitrose said the “refinement” of that offer would require customers to pay for their purchases before collecting a free cup at the checkout.
Plans to roll out the amended free tea and coffee proposition come six months after Waitrose launched a pilot in 15 of its stores across the UK.
The retailer told myWaitrose cardholders in an email today that the changes would come into effect from April 3.
Waitrose wrote: “Our myWaitrose free tea and coffee offer is one of the ways we thank our customers for shopping with us – and we want all our customers to be able to enjoy a free hot drink when they shop with us in our branches.
“From 3 April, we’ll simply be asking myWaitrose members to make a purchase before collecting their cup at the checkout.”
Lingering
A Waitrose spokesman added: “A free tea or coffee has always been one of the ways we thank our customers for shopping with us – and that has not changed – we are underlining our commitment to this much-loved offer.”
Back in January 2015, Waitrose changed the free tea and coffee deal it had in place in its cafés after customers lingered at tables without buying anything else.
