200-store roll-out planned
Specialist camera and photography retailer Jessops is to roll out up to 200 of its spacemix format stores after completing successful trials with the concept.
Jessops is to complete the roll-out by Christmas at a cost of up to£5 million. The retailer operates from 285 stores and the spacemix layout has been incorporated into all recently opened and planned stores, including the 5,000 sq ft out-of-town concept store at Brent Cross in north London, jointly occupied with Carphone Warehouse and Game.
‘It is too early to judge the Brent Cross store’s performance but, if successful, the concept could provide additional store opening opportunities for Jessops in out-of-town locations,’ said Jessops chairman Gavin Simonds.
The spacemix stores offer enhanced digital-photo processing services and are divided into four zones: a digital photo centre, camera hardware, an extended accessories range and a customer service point.
Simonds added: ‘We do not expect these format changes [spacemix] to impact profits in the current financial year due to the short-term disruption that will accompany the roll-out programme.’
The trial was extended to 16 stores at the end of October to enable management to assess their performance over the Christmas and January sales periods.
