Good figures across the board
Department store group John Lewis notched up a solid 4 per cent sales increase this Christmas.

John Lewis director of retail operations Gareth Thomas revealed that sales during the week leading up to Christmas were up 4.2 per cent like for like. In the week to December 31, sales were up 3.9 per cent. He said: 'We traded very strongly, outperforming our competitors and gaining market share.'

The group said like-for-like sales comparisons fell short during the first two days of clearance, against last year. However, electronics and home technology provided a welcome boost over the festive period, with a rise of 17.3 per cent.

Grocery arm Waitrose reported record sales, with 15 branches taking more than£1 million during the Christmas week.

Christmas staples, such as mince pies, champagne, nuts and cheese, exceeded sales estimates at the chain.
