US department store chain Macy’s is to make its overseas debut with the launch of its Bloomingdale’s chain in Dubai.
The retail group’s first store outside the US will open in February 2010 as part of a deal with Middle Eastern retail licensing group Al Tayer.
Macy’s will open a three-floor 146,000 sq ft clothing and accessories store and a one-floor 54,000 sq ft home store to anchor the Dubai Mall. The Dubai Mall will be one of the world’s largest shopping centres when it opens later this year.
Macy’s chairman, president and chief executive Terry J Lundgren said: “This will be our company’s first overseas location and we expect to learn a great deal about how our brands translate internationally.
“Dubai offers a unique opportunity for Bloomingdale’s. It is a fast-growing, affluent marketplace that has emerged as an international destination for tourism, sporting events and business.”
The stores will be managed and operated under a licensing agreement with Al Tayer Insignia, part of the Al Tayer Group.
