Amazon has appointed vice president of its European fashion division John Boumphrey to lead its UK business.
Boumphrey, who joined the online giant nine years ago as its UK media director, will succeed Doug Gurr as UK managing director, who stepped down in June to become director of the Natural History Museum in London.
Boumphrey has held a variety of roles during his time at Amazon across its leisure, home and consumable good categories. He has spent the last two years leading Amazon Fashion Europe where he as spearheaded initiatives including the launch of Prime Wardrobe and Stylesnap, which allows shoppers to take photos of fashion items and find similar ones in Amazon’s offering.
Prior to joining Amazon, Boumphrey was the trading director at Homebase and has also worked as a consultant at Bain & Co.
His appointment comes shortly after the departure of Amazon’s European boss Xavier Garambois, who will step down at the end of the year to be replaced by Jorrit Van der Meulen, the current head of devices for Europe.
Boumphrey said: “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to lead Amazon’s UK business, helping us to serve our UK customers and communities, as well as supporting our employees and thousands of businesses the length and breadth of the country.
“It’s hard to imagine that there were around 2,500 UK employees when I started almost 10 years ago, and since then I’ve seen a UK workforce that will this year grow to more than 40,000.”
