Brasher, 43, will also retain his former duties as he replaces Tim Mason in the marketing role. Mason has moved to the US to head Tesco's start-up convenience-store operations in the country. Mason will still have overall responsibility for global marketing at Tesco.
Brasher joined Tesco from RHM in 1986 and was appointed to the board in March 2004. He has held a number of marketing, commercial and store operations positions at Tesco, most recently non-food commercial director.
One of his first tasks will be to oversee the integration of Tesco's£45 million advertising account into Sir Frank Lowe's start-up agency Red Brick Road.
