A list of more than 2,000 Tesco customers’ email addresses and passwords were posted online yesterday after data stolen from other sites was compiled by hackers.
Tesco has deactivated the accounts of the customers whose details were posted on a text-sharing site, the BBC reported.
Attackers had used the details to steal Tesco vouchers from shoppers.
The details were reported to have been taken from other stolen data and then used on Tesco’s website. In 2,239 cases the same credentials had been used.
Tesco said: “We have contacted all customers who may have been affected and are committed to ensuring that none of them miss out as a result of this.
“We will issue replacement vouchers to the very small number who are affected.”
Tesco came under a similar attack last year when owners of Tesco Clubcards found their online accounts had been hacked.
In the US, retailer Target is being sued following a credit card security breach that put 40 million cards at risk in November and December last year.
