Grocer Tesco has started delivering pizza from a south London store as part of a drive to connect with local communities.
The retailer is trialling the service at its Extra store in Streatham, which is situated within a social housing scheme containing hundreds of flats, with deliveries made to those living in the immediate store vicinity.
The idea, which originated from the Streatham store manager, is part of chief executive Philip Clarke’s plan to give managers more flexibility to come up with new local initiatives, according to the Daily Mail.
If successful the service could be rolled out across the country.
Meanwhile, Tesco is also vying to take on McDonalds with the launch of a trial hamburger restaurant in Osterley, west London early next month.
The retailer has been innovating in new store formats over the past year and has installed new food restaurants into shops including Decks, a family-orientated carvery in its Coventry store. It has also put Giraffe, the restaurant it bought for £48.6m last year, into a handful of stores, to make its larger stores more of destination.
