For the 12 weeks ending March 25, Asda and Sainsbury's posted year-on-year growth of 9 per cent and 8 per cent respectively, ahead of Tesco, which produced 7 per cent growth. However, the latter remained well ahead of the pack with a market share of 31.2 per cent for the period. Morrisons' share also grew, but more slowly than its rivals.
Waitrose, Aldi and Lidl also continued to build their market share, the latter two at the expense of struggling Kwik Save. Somerfield also showed signs of weakness, with its share dipping by 0.3 per cent for the second successive 12-week period.
