Click here for part two of Retail Week Legends with Lord Kalms.
From his first day at the retailer right back in 1948 through to his golden rule of business – “never bet the company” - he shares recollections and insights that remain relevant to retail to this day.
From his discovery of a sourcing ‘El Dorado’ in the Far East that was central to Dixons’ rise, through to audacious takeover battles and the transformation of retail during his long career, Kalms tells a compelling story.
Starting with Dixons, and going on also to make Currys and PC World mainstays of the high street and retail parks, Kalms created a market leader.
Today, the business he created remains at the heart of retail in the UK and internationally following the creation of Dixons Carphone Warehouse.
Formed to reflect the massive consumer changes driven by the rise of digital technology, it retains the spirit of Kalms as well as that of one of the other greats of modern retail, Carphone founder Charles Dunstone.
