World Cup enthusiasm helped lift sales at John Lewis and Waitrose stores last week.
Turnover at the department store chain rose 15.3% to £52.9m in the period to June 12, led by the electricals and home technology category as fans continued to buy new televisions. TV sales climbed 42%.
In fashion, World Cup-related childrenswear was one of the strongest categories.
The Trafford store and Knight & Lee in Southsea were the top performing shops, up 22% and 20% respectively. Online sales advanced by 33%.
John Lewis head of multichannel Simon Russell said: “We certainly enjoyed a steadier end to the week than the England team and recorded a score I suspect Fabio Capello would have been dreaming of.”
Waitrose reported a 9.3% sales rise to £95.5m in the week, when sales of light snacks were boosted by the World Cup.
Garlic bread and sausage rolls rose by 22% and 13% respectively and convenience foods such as pizza proved popular.
