Argos plans 100 store closures in the UK over the next year as it shuts more stores starting next month, The Sun has reported

The Sainsbury’s owned homeware retailer shut 37 stores this year, including 34 in Ireland last month.

Argos is yet to confirm the location of store closures as it moves away from high streets and expands its presence with concessions inside Sainsbury’s branches.

The general merchandise chain plans to replace standalone stores with 30 concessions inside Sainsbury’s in the financial year ending March 2024, leaving 70 locations without a direct replacement.

This comes after Argos said in its latest financial results that it saw higher sales through branches at Sainsbury’s supermarkets than standalone stores for the first time last year.

The retailer added that it expects to have 180 standalone stores and between 430 and 460 shop-in-shops inside Sainsbury’s by March 2024.

An Argos spokesperson told The Sun: “To make shopping more convenient for customers and to enable us to invest where it matters most, we are relocating many of our standalone Argos stores to Sainsbury’s – this includes our Grimsby Alexandra Dock and Scunthorpe Argos stores.

“Brand new Argos stores will open inside Sainsbury’s Grimsby and Sainsbury’s Scunthorpe next month, enabling customers to purchase thousands of technology, home and toy products from Argos while picking up their groceries.”
