Sainsbury’s is offering romantics half price Champagne for Valentine’s Day alongside its other raft of promotions.
Sainsbury’s is also running an offer of five family meals for £20 as shoppers tighten their purse strings after the Christmas binge. It also has around 1,000 items at £1 in stores.
The grocer hosted an investor visit to its Crayford store on Wednesday, its first 100,000 sq ft shop.
Sainsbury’s told investors that its ‘five meals for £20’ promotion is resonating with customers.
Jefferies analyst James Grzinic said progress on extending the Sainsbury’s offer is evident in the Crayford store. He said: “There is a re-emphasis on fresh counters, more assisted selling ideas in non-food and a re-launch of the ‘By Sainsbury’s’ own-label range is underway.”
Grzinic said new space, including convenience and extensions, and non-food should provide Sainsbury’s with five year’s worth of growth opportunities.
New group development director Darren Shapland is investigating future growth plans including financial services, digital, and overseas, with ten staff now located in China.
He said Sainsbury’s boss Justin King told investors that January has been softer and reiterated that the industry remains rational from a pricing perspective. He added that customers want to control their expenditure and want meal solutions, which is why it launched ‘five meals for £20’.
