Poundstretcher has axed its transactional website less than two years after it launched.
The move casts doubt over whether value retailers can make money from selling low value products online. Neither Poundland, 99p Stores or B&M Bargains have a transactional website.
Of the other large value players, only Wilkinson has a full online offer. Home Bargains also operates online, but it only sells higher priced products.
It is understood Poundstretcher’s transactional website - which sold products from 99p - has been pulled for the short term as it focuses on store expansion instead.
Sources said Poundstretcher plans to relaunch the site “in the future” but it will use a different concept.
Poundstretcher is driving rapid store growth, aiming to open 14 stores to hit 400 within the next two months.
Poundstretcher declined to comment.
