Primark has given an update on the financial support it plans to give to the employees of its supplier which was based in the collapsed Rana Plaza building in Bangladesh as the death toll reaches 1,000.
The retailer said it will use the recognised framework for paying compensation when the fate of its supplier New Wave’s employees is established.
The framework was developed by trade unions and trade associations, and accepted by leading NGOs, to deal with situations such as this
Primark is now providing food packages to 750 household on a weekly basis but will distribute to more if necessary. It said the programme will continue for as long as needed.
It said: “Primark cannot speak for the other brands involved – they will have to make their own statement on the issue of compensation. However, the company does of course stand by its earlier statement to compensate the victims of this tragedy.”
“A further comprehensive programme covering the immediate and long-term needs of the survivors and the dependents of the deceased is also being finalised. This programme will include medical and occupational rehabilitation. This will be managed by international and local NGOs.”
The Rana Plaza collapse, which is understood to have been caused by the addition of three illegally constructed floors to the eight story building, has so far claimed over 1,000 lives.
Rescuers are still searching for survivors from the rubble of the collapse which occurred on April 24. Rescuers found a survivor today after 17 days under the rubble.
