Boxpark is poised to open its second pop-up mall next summer after plans to move into Croydon were approved by council chiefs.

Boxpark, which already operates in Shoreditch, east London, will launch a larger mall on the Ruskin Square site, next to East Croydon railway station.

Croydon Council’s planning committee has rubber-stamped the five-year scheme, which will be delivered in partnership with the Greater London Authority and developers Stanhope and Schroders.

The pop-up mall, which will be made from 97 shipping containers, will feature more than 30 independent small and medium-sized businesses. The offer will focus on restaurants and bars, but will be complemented by a number of retailers.

Boxpark Croydon, which is expected to create up to 200 jobs, will also feature a courtyard space hosting events throughout the year.

The scheme will occupy Ruskin Square during the wider office and housing redevelopment of the site by Stanhope and Schroders, which will include more than 100,000 sq ft of retail, cafe and restaurant space alongside 625 new homes and 1.23 million sq ft of office space.

Boxpark founder and chief executive Roger Wade said: “We are so excited to be bringing Boxpark to Croydon and delighted the planning committee supported the project so resoundingly. This is the culmination of many months of work across many disciplines.”
