WHSmith is deploying updated PoS technology across its high street and travel outlets in an effort to drive its convenience offer.
The retailer has partnered with retail technology supplier Aptos to update its PoS software.
It plans to roll out the technology across more than 900 stores across Europe.
The investment is part of WHSmith’s strategy to invest in its technology offer to drive customer services and sales.
Chief information officer Ian Windsor said: “Investment in our IT infrastructure across our high street and travel channels is key to our development strategy.
“We need solid and reliable in-store technology to support our expansion plans and we are confident that Aptos can provide this along with the required support.”
Upgrading in-store systems is the second biggest investment priority for the UK’s top 150 retailers in the year ahead, according to the IT in Retail report from consultancy Martec International, second only to ecommerce and multichannel investments.
Upgrading in-store tech is a priority for the wider retailer sector as well, with 29% planning on replacing their store systems and 21% intending to replace their merchandise management systems in the year ahead.
