Amazon has reported international sales, including the UK, grew 33% in the three months to September 30 reaching $2.61bn (£1.56bn).

Across the whole business profits rose 68% to $199m (£119m) in the quarter helped by strong sales of Amazon’s e-reader, the Kindle.

Amazon founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos said “Kindle has become the number one bestselling item by both unit sales and dollars – not just in our electronics store but across all product categories on Amazon.com. It’s also the most wished for and the most gifted.”

This month Amazon launched the Kindle internationally and it can now be bought in 100 countries.

It also lowered the price of the e-reader to $259 (£155) from $279 (£167) just weeks after announcing its international availability.
