Morrisons and Pret are leveraging partnerships with Amazon as they step up their respective responses to the coronavirus pandemic.
Big-four supermarket chain Morrisons is expanding its same-day online grocery delivery service to Amazon Prime members, covering most of London and more major cities across the UK including Edinburgh, Cardiff and Bristol.
Morrisons said 40 of its stores will now be fulfilling same-day deliveries through Prime Now.
The grocer’s chief executive David Potts said: “Expanding this fast home-delivery service to more cities will help us to play our full part in feeding the nation. Through our conveniently located stores and the popular Amazon Prime Now service, more and more customers will be able to access deliveries to their doorstep at this very difficult time.”
Amazon UK country manager Doug Gurr added: “We are pleased to be able to support more customers through the expansion of Morrisons on Prime Now. The convenient service enables us to offer Morrisons’ high-quality grocery selection to even more Prime members.”
Pret a Manger has also partnered with Amazon to launch its first ever retail coffee range.
Three of the high street chain’s organic coffee products can be pre-ordered on Amazon from today, ahead of the launch day on May 18.
The range includes Pret’s classic-blend ground coffee, its single-origin Peruvian ground coffee and its espresso beans.
The launch comes as part of Pret’s move to bring forward the introduction of a retail range to sell through third-party businesses to complement its core high street business.
Pret said the partnership with Amazon marked “the beginning of a wider retailer offering” and added that other products were already “under development for future release”.
Pret’s UK boss Clare Clough said: “We are extremely proud of our organic coffee, which is carefully sourced from some of the finest coffee-growing regions in the world. We also know how much customers are missing it from their daily lives at the moment, so we’re delighted to be launching our first retail range with Amazon.”
Meanwhile, Pret is reopening 100 of its stores today for takeaway and deliveries only, with new social distancing measures in place across all of the sites.
