Retail giant Amazon has named Doug Herrington as the new chief executive of its retail arm, weeks after the previous boss stepped down.
In a letter to Amazon employees, the retail giant’s chief executive Andy Jassy said Herrington was the person to replace David Clark as chief executive of Worldwide Amazon Stores. Herrington has been at the company for 17 years, having joined Amazon in 2005.
He helped launch Amazon Fresh in 2007 and in 2015 took over the retailer’s sprawling North American consumer business.
“He is a builder of great teams and brings substantial retail, grocery, demand generation, product development and Amazon experience to bear,” said Jassy.
“He’s also a terrific inventor for customers, thinks big, has a thoughtful vision around how category management and ops can work well together, is a unifier, is highly curious, and an avid learner.”
Herrington replaces Clark, who is leaving Amazon after 23 years, to become chief executive of logistics start-up Flexport.
Jassy said Amazon’s operations would be “united” under the leadership of John Felton who has been at the company for 18 years.
Among the people reporting directly to Herrington will be former Tesco director and current Amazon physical stores boss Tony Hoggett.
Amazon Prime Day will be taking place on July 12 this year, at a time of rising inflation and fears of recession around the globe.
